The early years lay the foundations of literacy. Rich experiences with books and print help young children learn a complex range of attitudes, concepts and skills that orient them to reading and writing as means of communication. The learning environments of home and preschool are critical. Talking, reading and writing in stimulating and supportive places with others, young children:

  • Develop high expectations of print;
  • Build oral models for literacy and book language;
  • Learn written symbols and signs;
  • Grasp print conventions;
  • Listen on purpose for new information;
  • Use language to create new worlds beyond the here and now.
